Description:  Wide Victorian bangle which has hand engraving depicting a swallow chasing a butterfly, symbolizing the soul (the butterfly) being chased by love's messenger (the swallow).  The Victorians loved nature and everything in it had a meaning to them.

This sterling silver bangle is English and the decoration was influenced by the aesthetic movement.

About the aesthetic movement:

In the mid 1850's,  the US and European signed treaties with Japan.  This opened up the East to travelers and a passion for all things Japanese and Oriental followed.   This was the beginning of the Aesthetic movement in jewelry and art.  Art and jewelry from this period is often decorated with bamboo, birds, water reeds or cattails and other items found outdoors in Asia.
