Description: The word, pansy, came from the French
word, "pense", meaning to think of. The Victorians often
gave jewelry in the form of Pansy to remind the wearer to think
of the giver.
The technique used to make this French brooch is called Neillo. Neillo was a technique used during the
late 19th century predominately by French and Russian jewelers.
The creation of Neillo jewelry was quite labor intensive.
The technique was a processed by which a mixture of silver,
copper, lead and sulfur was melted and then poured into designs
which the artist had etched into the silver. The piece
would then be fired in a kiln and polished. Sometimes, as
is the case with this brooch, rose gold was added to make
