Description: A Victorian shell cameo with an intricate carving depicting Zeus delivering his son, Hercules, to Athena.
Hercules was the illegitimate son of Zeus and a mortal
woman. Zeus' wife, Hera, became so outrageous at her
husband's infidelity that she sent snakes to kill the infant
Hercules. This cameo shows Zeus delivering the infant
Hercules to Athena for protection. Beside Athena is a dog,
symbolizing protection and loyalty. Hercules was guarded
by Athena but raised by the Nymphs. The two child-like
figures near the dog most likely symbolize the nymphs.
A desirable and hard to find carving set in a beautiful
frame.
