Historical information: During the Napoleonic wars (1813-15), Germany asked its wealthy citizens to donate their gold jewelry to the war effort. In return, they were given jewelry made from iron, as a symbol of their patriotism.   The name of the campaign was, "Ich gabe gold fuer Eisen" (I gave gold for Iron).   After the war, the popularity of Berlin iron jewelry continued up until the mid 1830's.
