Description: A three dimensional mourning miniature
with a deeply moving inscription on the back, "in memory of
the best of husbands, Patrick Berkley ob 2 June 1782 at 47".
This inscription evokes a sense of profound grief and loss.
Unfortunately, my photos do not capture the bleakness of this
mourning miniature. The background is stark white.
The ash trees (often used in Georgian mourning jewelry) go
from pale brown to dark brown giving the miniature a very real
three dimensional feeling. The intense black obelisk
contrasts sharply against the stark white background.
Note how beautifully the obelisk is decorated; with rose gold
gild, an ivory urn and a plaque with the initials PB on it.
The miniature is on ivory and is made from hair and sepia paint.
