Description: This Georgian mourning pendant commemorates the death of a little girl. The front of the pendant has a superbly executed sepia miniature.
It depicts a mother crying at the tomb of her little girl. Note that her other children are shown clinging to her. The urn is made from mother-of-pearl and accented with gold and seed pearls. Inside the glass cover on the back is brown plaited hair with a white enamel ring around it. (White enamel, symbolizing purity, was used to commemorate the death of children and unwed women.) The wording on the rim says, "Caroline Frances Seward Died 9 Nov 1787 age 3 y 8 m" (3 years, 8 months)
The frame is rose gold, most likely high karat.
