Description: Memento mori (meaning,
remember thy death) jewelry is rare and highly sought after.
Its purpose was to remind the wearer that death
was an unavoidable part of life, something to be prepared for at
all times.
This scene on this brooch has stark memento mori
symbols: the skull in the foreground; the hourglass on the top
of the tomb and the weeping willow tree. This gold brooch
has a silver back with Dutch hallmarks (setting is original and
unaltered, Georgian Dutch pieces did sometimes have a gold front
and a silver back). The scene is created from hair on ivory;
