Description: Two fine examples of Georgian mourning jewelry. Mourning jewelry from the Georgian period is scarce and highly sought after. The brooch on the left, #5213, has faceted Whitby jet surrounding pale blonde hair. The enamel brooch on the right, #5214, has white and black enamel and read, "Sacred to the memory of a departed friend". Both of these English brooches are high karat rose gold and have curved glass or rose quartz crystals atop the hair. Each has the quality and attention to detail found in jewelry from this era.
Note: a jeweler could easily remove the crystal of either brooch so that the hair of someone you have loved and lost could be placed inside. Since the backs are not inscribed, a personal inscription could also be added. Sandra Johnson, (see links section) does beautiful hair work braiding.
