tesserae
missing on the bottom tip of heart
Description: A romantic keepsake from the 19th century (1860-80), this heart shaped frame was most likely a a souvenir of a Victorian lady's "Grand Tour" of Italy.
From a distance, fine micro mosaics look like a work of art, but closer examination reveals hundreds of tiny tesserae assembled to make the image. Micromosaics are composed of hundreds or thousands of tiny "tesserae" that are made from very thin glass threads. The long, thin strands of glass are heated and then cut into tiny segments called tesserae.
These tiny glass pieces are put into place by the artist to create the image or picture. The painstaking process is of course, all done by hand.
This heart shaped picture frame has a gorgeous 'forget me not' flower design. Note the fine quality workmanship used to make the edges of the frame look scalloped by using miniscule pieces of curved white tesserae.
