Description: Poignant Georgian mourning miniature
comprised of hair work on ivory. This French miniature
commemorates the death of two lovers. A faithful dog
(representing fidelity) sits next to a their tomb. Atop
the plinth (tomb) are two flaming hearts and a bow and quiver
(representing love). The two birds on the right,
represent the two united souls flying towards heaven.
Notice the touching way in which the birds are looking at each
other, their beaks touching.
The ground around the plinth is covered with forget-me-nots and
in the left corner, in French, the remembrance: "they are
united". (Ils sont unie). The frame is wooden
with an embossed decoration.
