Description: Superbly executed, rare Dutch watercolor miniature, most likely on vellum or parchment. An ornate marble tomb is sheltered under a cascading tree. On the tomb, "He died for family and country". Beside the tomb is a grieving Athena (Goddess of war) who rests upon a cannon. Note the face on the shield of Athena. On the left side of the tomb, draped in black, is a child crying and pointing to the tomb of his father. Note that the shadow of Athena (symbolizing war and destruction) falls upon the tomb. At the base of the picture are the initials, "AS". The initials have a wisp of hair around them. To see other images of this item, please click here: photo1 and photo2 and photo3 and photo4
